Even though I do not belong among those women who use make-up on daily basis and especially a lot, I am only talking about this from personal experience of how I see the world response to women who do wear lots of make-up every day and how is this affecting young women. I follow lots of gorgeous make-up gurus as on Facebook as on Youtube and I think some really do know their business (since they are paid by Youtube and Google themselves it shouldn't really be a problem). But many people do think of this in a really misguided way. Because make-up and applying make-up on your own face or someone else's is truly a work of art. Its effect and results are more than just stunning and I can understand why girls fell in love with it. I will write lots of my points of view, pros and cons of the whole thing and about the girls themselves and how the society is accepting it.
First off, my point of view on make-up is completely different as some girls might have. It's just I don't see it as important as some might do and since I don't use it that often, I especially don't see it crucial to make it in this world. But truth is, girls do have serious self-esteem issues and some might boost their confidence by covering their face in it, when some just do it for the thrill and just because they feel pretty in it, but in a different way then the girls before. There are lots and lots of different cases and reasons why girls use make-up, but as far as I am concerned: I don't see it as a matter of true importance.
Now why do girls have self-esteem issues? And I don't mean those issues when you sometimes look at yourself in the mirror and you sigh real deep and think why has the nature given you such potato-like nose. But hey, is anyone really completely satisfied with themselves? I'm sure that is not correct. What I mean is those real issues when you deliberately avoid flashing cameras in the hot summer and all the mirrors so you won't get to see the shocking sight of your natural self. When you care for your skin more than those who have flawless skin and still they look at you like you must eat lots of sugar, don't hydrate and like you aren't familiar with any skin care company. I hate prejudices and that's how I understand where those girls who say they feel safe and confident behind make-up come from. They come from just wanting to feel beautiful for the day.
We all have issues, but that doesn't mean we have to mock somebody else for their own issue. Nobody's perfect. Speaking for myself, I know my skin is far from perfect and there are features on my face that I would give anything to replace. Imagine how many girls think even worse about themselves. But when you think about it, your body is the only thing you have. It would not be fair of me to say that many people don't realize their value, because I am well aware that lots of people also love and appreciate their body. I don't want to make this post seem like I feel sorry for those girls or that I defend this way of lifestyle. The only thing I have to say about it is that I respect it and nothing else. But things are often harder than they seem on the surface. I know girls who ware makeup a lot feel better when they are covered in powder and foundation. I can't deny the fact that I also feel prettier and more confident when wearing mascara and red lipstick. What I do find sad and frustrating how girls can't even go out for a walk without putting makeup on. Like I said, not all girls are like that, not even those who do wear makeup on daily basis. What I'm trying to say is that the problem of trying to fit in society and be accepted only when you feel better, therefore covered in makeup, is growing larger and larger and I can't even dare to think what an impact this will have on our descendants. I can't even imagine my daughter feeling the way I used to feel before I accepted that I wasn't bad looking without the mascara and all that. But aside all that, I don't blame those girls who wear makeup to cover their insecurities for what's going on in the society. I blame the society itself. And the society is us. Society is made of young, bright people and I am devastated when I see people being so down just because of their looks. I'm sad because the young people are actually the ones who have future in their hands. I also belong among that group of people and I try every day to do my best what I can do to improve the current situation. But it takes more than just me. It takes a nation.
Makeup is something that is magical and can (seemingly) improve your self-esteem. There's a great video on makeup by the bestselling author, John Green: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ijG6Tc431hQ. Aside from his personal enthusiasm on wearing makeup, I think what he said about like "having a pretty armour" and that women actually do it for themselves is very crucial for people to understand the true meaning of makeup. It's some sort of security that you always have and like John said: "It's like your favorite outfit except you can wear it every day." I do realize that men are having difficulties understanding why women wear makeup. I think it's all actually pretty simple. I hear many men saying how when they spend the night with a woman and then seeing her real face the next morning they (women) are actually lying to them and deceiving men to believe they are beautiful. That causes and has caused (justifiably) many outrages not only by passionate feminists, but also by many young girls and boys as well all over the world. I could write forever how that is a completely idiotic statement, but that is not my point here. My point is why women do wear makeup and I think I've made it pretty clear so far.
But still, no matter how many people can be pro improving self-esteem on a daily basis with encouraging posts and means, people will always have self-esteem and self-existence problems. Because no matter how we try to change this prejudice, the society will always win and continue to degrade women on that matter. I wish I could say that things are actually getting better, but I literally can't, because I know too many girls having trouble accepting who they are in full so I don't think it would be fair of me saying that the situation is improving. But on the other hand, I am far from a pessimist. I do believe things can change and I do believe girls can regain their confidence and good self-image to the time they were little girls and didn't care if the world accepted them or not. Speaking of young girls, I also noticed the growing pressure of the society and media on the little ones. I can't help but see how so many young pretty girls are already so obsessed with their looks, and not in a good way. What I also believe is also that the social networks are becoming to have more and more influence on the growing youngsters. Likes on Facebook and Instagram, Twitter, Tumblr, ... It's all happening so fast and to think in what era my kids could be growing up in... Well, it makes me sick all in all.
While the biggest fashion/youth webzines like Vogue, Elle, Seventeen, Glamour etc. keep repeating themselves how much the natural look is important for a woman to accept, they keep posting pictures and posts about "perfect" women and starlets from the Hollywood like Kim Kardashian and others. Since I'm a teenage girl, born in a totally wrong time (thanks mom and dad), I can say that even for me, who has her self-esteem on average, those things are rather disturbing and obnoxious. How are girls who are less capable of self-control and maintaining good image about themselves ready to deal with all this? No wonder things are the way they are in this fucked up world. Just imagine the future of our kids. Totally obsessed and always surrounded by those magazines and media who tries to break into their pure souls on every step. It doesn't sound much of a good future, does it?
This problem of destroying women's self-esteem is only growing larger and more dangerous, while most of us only care about making money and the media. Even those who have those sort of issues. We can never escape and that's what I'm really afraid of.
Things don't have to be the way they are, though. We can all change the future, it is actually in our power to change the way the world thinks. Like I said, many organizations have already begun operating on that area and I think that's very encouraging for the growing world of youngsters while we'll grow older. I know that deep inside people do have good in their hearts and that they are aware of this problem we're facing here. But not all are prepared or willing to do anything about it, but they won't act like they don't care when they'll be wiping of their daughter's tears for the same reason.
I don't mean to sound this pessimistic, but I just see these things the way they are: really fucking depressing so far. And it's only going worse. But like I said, we do possess the power to change the world and if only we could stand united and protest against the all sorts of self-esteem-ruining campaigns and companies, we could really make a difference. Because I still have that tiny bit of faith in humanity left.
