I'm aware of the fact that the letter "C" was supposed to be entirely finished by the end of the December, but I don't have much movies beginning with a "D" so I decided to add another one beginning with the third letter in the alphabet. I can't believe I actually forgot about this one; it's like the most dramatic of them all. And of course, lovely Zac Efron is in it so how could we possibly ignore it? Anyway, I started to get the feeling I only choose the cheesy ones (movies) and that somehow I don't seem proficient enough and maybe from time to time I should add some classic old-timers or a cult action movie with Bruce Willis on top. Well, I don't mind a bit of change, I'm just not sure how good/bad would I be performing it. But change is almost always good, so I'm up for it!
Anyway, we're here because of this amazing movie that really gave me shivers. We couldn't quite say it's another cheesy teen movie because Charlie (Zac Efron) is dealing with some really horrible things in his life that any person can deal with, not only teenagers. I think he's very open-minded for his age and really knows how to take care of his little brother, Sam. They were a true team and of course a person feels totally lost and suddenly realizes the life around oneself when that person that meant the world to you is gone. Especially in this case where he was gone quite out of the blue, nobody really expected that kind of turn-out, but the whole movie is really about how then Charlie is dealing with it. And I think we can all agree that the way he reacted was pretty normal. Everybody reacts differently and how they face the whole thing and all we need to do at that moment is accept that person that feels completely out of control in this situation. It's makes the whole scene even sadder to think that happens every day so many times.
But I think that's also the part we need to accept here. Because death is a part of life and this movie shows it very nicely how a person can be picked up after when they think their world is crumbling down. Like there is no way out and they just want to turn back time. I know it was hard for Charlie and it hurt my heart to think people actually deal with those kind of scary things every day. I know we all have to (or will) face that part of life because it's just inevitable. But that part also always teaches us something, because if you never fall you never learn how to pick yourself up. And picking yourself up is probably one of the most important things you can learn in a lifetime. But here it is, the problem again. Although I can debate on how death is in fact a very useful lesson, the situation in the movie however wasn't that simple to get around. The death of his little brother was really unexpected and you can imagine (if you haven't seen the movie) how torn he was, how he was blaming himself for his brother's death and how it should've been him instead. He was gnawed by the guilt and he couldn't do anything about it, except to move on which was technically impossible to do at the time. It was hard to already accept the fact that he'll never see his brother smile again or play baseball. It was a tough on so many levels, not only the mental, but he started to neglect himself, too. They way he was dealing it, with denial and guilt was no good to him or the people around him. His future didn't seem so bright. Nothing seemed right or that things will ever go back on the old tracks.
But then, then the miracle happens, like in every bad situation of a good person. It's just a natural law, I would say, that good things eventually do happen to good people and this was Charlie's turn. He met a girl, a great girl that was beyond comparison. I think he really did instantly fell in love with her, although it seemed he didn't trust her at the start and it was the same with her. They both kinda had trust issues and it seemed like two lonely souls finally found each other. Of course, they began to fall for each other and I was happy, thinking Charlie has finally found luck, the odds are finally in his favor! But something had to happen, otherwise the plot wouldn't be as amazing as it was. After his brother's death he started seeing him, like his ghost. The spirit before they cross on "the other side". He was playing baseball again with him and seeing his face again was a true relief to him. He didn't realize how a great big deal would it be if Sam (the brother) would eventually cross over. Because he was still living int he past which was totally acceptable and it could hardly be any other way, since he was his only connection of having a family, being loved and taking care of someone. He wouldn't let go. And when he started seeing this girl more often, Sam began to feel the distance between them, like Charlie's forgetting him. But that was just a start.
Anyway, Charlie one day realized the girl he has been seeing is actually missing and suddenly something clicked. He has been seeing with her ghost, he can see ghosts. And so he started to search for her all across the sea (since it was a town near the sea, and the girl was planning on going on a trip around the world, breaking some sort of record) and he figured out that maybe she isn't dead after all, maybe she's just close to it and that she is trapped somewhere. He then finally found her but she was unconscious and was in a coma for several months later. Although a lot fo time passed by, she then woke up and remembered every single moment spent with Charlie as if she would gone missing at all. It was a complicated story and the relationships between characters were even more complicated but I must say that it is a movie worth watching.
It teaches us many things: from love to hate, from self-destruction to being fixed, from lost to found. And Charlie was found again, Sam did cross over and Charlie was fine with it, he accepted was happened and was ready to move on. It was a brave step, I must say, judging on what he has been through and how he suffered. But at the end, we always find the light that pulls us towards our goal; even if it was a new adventure for Sam or letting go for Charlie. They both kinda felt peace inside and also satisfaction and relief that they were finally both ready to move on. But moving on doesn't mean you forget the person, that was one of the greatest lessons this movie could taught us. Moving on was being able to keep that person who was gone buried deep inside your memory and heart and being able to remember them without tears, but with kind warmth within and a smile on your face thinking of the good times you two were able to spent with each other. That's worth remembering and that was the motto of Charlie to get him on the right path. Feeling free to think of the person that is gone is the goal of each person that has lost someone and I guess that was what Charlie was looking for all along and by being with Tess he did find it. The right path has been shown to him.
